Gallup (Navajo NaʼnÝzhoozhÝ) is a city located in McKinley County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,209. It is the county seat of McKinley CountyTemplate:GR.

Route 66 runs through Gallup and the town's name is mentioned in the lyrics to the song, "Route 66".

Gallup is located at 35°31'25" North, 108°44'3" West (35.523750, -108.734088)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.6 km² (13.4 mi²). 34.6 km² (13.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,209 people, 6,810 households, and 4,869 families residing in the city. The population density is 584.5/km² (1,513.7/mi²). There are 7,349 housing units at an average density of 212.5/km² (550.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 40.11% White, 1.08% African American, 36.64% Native American, 1.43% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 14.77% from other races, and 5.87% from two or more races. 33.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,810 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 19.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% are non-families. 23.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.39.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,868, and the median income for a family is $39,197. Males have a median income of $33,380 versus $24,441 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,789. 20.8% of the population and 16.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 16.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
