Garland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 88,068. The county seat is Hot Springs. Garland County was formed on April 5, 1873 and named for Augustus Garland, 11th governor of Arkansas.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,903 km² (735 mi²). 1,754 km² (677 mi²) of it is land and 149 km² (57 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.81% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 88,068 people, 37,813 households, and 25,259 families residing in the county. The population density is 50/km² (130/mi²). There are 44,953 housing units at an average density of 26/km² (66/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.85% White, 7.80% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 2.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 37,813 households out of which 25.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.20% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.20% are non-families. 28.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.30% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 21.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,724, and the median income for a family is $38,079. Males have a median income of $28,117 versus $20,421 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,631. 14.60% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.70% of those under the age of 18 and 8.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
