Kittanning is a borough located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 4,787. It is the county seat of Armstrong CountyTemplate:GR. It is located on the west bank of the Allegheny River, founded on the site of the 18th century Native American village of Kittanning at the western end of the Kittanning Path. The village was destroyed by a British raid in 1756 during the French and Indian War.

It was the filming location for the 2002 movie, The Mothman Prophecies.

Geography

Kittanning is located at 40°49'12" North, 79°31'17" West (40.820085, -79.521398)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,787 people, 2,032 households, and 1,117 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,777.2/km² (4,615.2/mi²). There are 2,251 housing units at an average density of 835.7/km² (2,170.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 97.31% White, 1.57% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,032 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.0% are non-families. 40.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the borough the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 82.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.2 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $20,921, and the median income for a family is $30,822. Males have a median income of $29,036 versus $20,040 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $13,787. 16.4% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.8% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
