Riverhead is a town located in Suffolk County, New York on the north shore of Long Island. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 27,680. The name signifies that the mouth of the Peconic River is in this town.

History

The town became the county seat in 1792, replacing Southold.

Geography

The north town line is delineated by the Long Island Sound with Connecticut on the opposite shore. The east town line is the border of the Town of Southold. The town is partly on the North Fork of the county.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 521.3 km² (201.3 mi²). 174.5 km² (67.4 mi²) of it is land and 346.8 km² (133.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 66.53% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,680 people, 10,749 households, and 7,287 families residing in the town. The population density is 158.6/km² (410.8/mi²). There are 12,479 housing units at an average density of 71.5/km² (185.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.23% White, 10.52% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.43% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 6.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,749 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 26.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $46,195, and the median income for a family is $55,939. Males have a median income of $40,855 versus $32,288 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,647. 8.6% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
